Break out your sweaters and cozy up with a mug of something warm; it's finally autumn!
Brisk breezes and vivid colors make any walk through the autumn leaves a joy, but where do you go to see fall foliage in Seattle Southside? And, almost as importantly, where do you go afterwards to refuel and warm back up? We've paired some of our favorite places to see the beautiful fall colors with a place nearby to grab a bite to eat.
Set on a stretch of shoreline between Tacoma and Seattle, Saltwater State Park is one of the most popular Washington state parks. While you won't often have the beach to yourself on a warm summer day, it's ideal in the fall when crowds dwindle and the foliage comes out in full display.
After your visit, drive up Marine View Dr. S. about five minutes to quaint downtown Des Moines. There are plenty of cozy places to warm up along the main street, but you can't go wrong with Auntie Irene's. This neighborhood favorite is always decked out in festive seasonal decor and has plenty of comfortable seating. You can even see Puget Sound from the window! Get a latte and a hot sandwich, and finish it off with a locally made pastry.
Des Moines Beach Park is a great place for a picnic or a stroll along Puget Sound at any time of year. In autumn, you'll get amazing views of the yellow, orange, and red trees dotting the shoreline while enjoying the cool, crisp sea air. Just behind the beach is the Des Moines Creek Trail (more on that below).
When you're ready for a sip or bite, stop at Quarterdeck, which is just steps away from the park. Sip a hot espresso drink with a fresh pastry while sitting on the patio that overlooks the water. The menu also includes craft beer and cider, as well as an extensive wine list centered on Washington wines. Bonus: It's dog-friendly on the deck.
The Des Moines Creek Trail is accessible from Des Moines Beach Park on one end and a trailhead near the Angle Lake Lightrail Station on the other. This paved, tree-lined path is great for running, biking, walking a dog, or pushing a stroller. During the fall, it becomes an autumnal wonderland, with leaves sprinkled throughout the path. Keep an eye out for salmon swimming upstream.
In addition to Quarterdeck, a great place to stop after walking this trail is Anthony's HomePort, where you can get classic, New England-style clam chowder with potatoes and bacon. Enjoy the view of the marina and snowcapped mountains out your window while you stay cozy inside.
Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden
The Highline SeaTac Botanical Garden is a hidden gem among hidden gems. It’s a quiet, peaceful oasis; something that you might not expect to find so close to the airport. Soothe your soul in the landscaped gardens and relax near the running waters of a gentle stream. Be sure to take a moment to appreciate the Japanese Seike Garden, which is especially beautiful in the fall when the Japanese maple trees turn a vivid deep red.
For a hearty meal nearby, head down the street to Sharps RoastHouse. For a quintessentially PNW experience, warm up with a bowl of made-to-order King Salmon Chowder, or try the Northwest pasta with smoked salmon.
The drive to Seahurst Park is an experience in itself. The lush forest creates a natural tunnel, which opens up to a beautiful scene on Puget Sound. Walk along the beach and soak in the natural beauty with all your senses. You’ll see the Fauntleroy ferry shuttling passengers to and from Vashon Island, wildlife like the great blue heron, smell the salt and fresh water converge, and feel the cool breeze coming inland. Bonus: it has one of the coolest playground structures you'll ever see.
When you’re ready for a break, drive to Smarty Pants Garage, a motorcycle-themed restaurant known for its killer sandwiches. And don’t underestimate the homemade soups, including the veggie and meat chilis.
Tukwila's Fort Dent Park is a local favorite, with a mix of open spaces, picnic areas, and well-maintained paths. For a long walk or bike ride, head to the Interurban Trail, where you’ll cross bridges over the Green River and see plenty of fall color on your way. The path is more than 14 miles long, so if you'd like to see fall leaves while cycling, this is a great way to do it.
When you're ready to warm up, head to Arashi Ramen. On a brisk day, you just can’t beat a bowl of authentic Japanese ramen. The rich pork broth and thick noodles are a staple of dining guides and itineraries, and for good reason.
Enjoy the crisp fall air at Angle Lake Park, where you can catch some of the best views the region has to offer. Picture Mt. Rainier standing tall in the background and fall foliage dotting the rim of the lake. This 10-acre lakefront park is located minutes away from the Angle Lake Link Light Rail station. It has an awesome playground where kids can burn off steam, and multiple covered picnic shelters you can duck into, even if there's a drizzle.
Afterwards, warm up at 13 Coins with a bowl of hearty French onion soup and cozy up in the high back booths. This local institution is famous for its retro flair, all-day breakfast, and extensive menu of classic American fare.
